The McCabe Leadership Grant is awarded by the John’s Island Foundation for special capital projects that will have a significant impact on and ensure lasting benefits to our neighbors in need in Indian River County. It is named for Elli McCabe, the founder of the John’s Island Foundation. She had the vision in 1999 to recognize the need for capital funding in Indian River County philanthropy.
$200,000 inaugural McCabe Leadership Grant to the Coalition for Attainable Homes
The Coalition for Attainable Homes strives to prevent and end homelessness on the Treasure Coast by supporting the development and acquisition of affordable housing. The focus is on addressing the limited affordable housing stock in the community, preserving it for the tenants and the community. Currently the agency has 33 properties in Indian River County. The housing is targeted to low-income families, Veterans, and other vulnerable populations in the community. The Coalition, in conjunction with Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, also strives to rapidly rehouse those who have become homeless. In 2021 and 2022 the agencies have lost affordable housing opportunities due to landlord property sales and inflated rents which are not sustainable for this population.
The Coalition was awarded a $200,000 inaugural McCabe Leadership Grant from the John’s Island Foundation in April 2022 for a 3300 sq. ft. new triplex to be built on 32nd Avenue in Gifford. The triplex will comprise three units of affordable rental housing. Louise Hubbard, Executive Director for Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council and Julianne Price, President, Coalition for Attainable Homes and board member of Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council are overseeing this project.
The County has donated the land on 32nd Avenue. This is a $380,000 building project. The John’s Island Foundation is the only foundation in this project. This is an excellent example of a public-private partnership to provide critical housing in IRC.
